Was it Joan Rivers who, while hosting the Emmy Awards, reportedly blurted: “We’re going to a commercial break, so you have time to feed your dog, or wash your dog, or if you’re Filipino, eat your dog”?

It was a remark so offensive then it prompted a public rebuke from the National Federation of Filipino American Associations.

That Joan Rivers — who had called Michelle Obama “Blackie O” and carelessly said the Palestinians “started it” — passed away September 4 following a throat surgery, the occasional racist punchlines all but forgotten. Filipinos prefer to remember the Rivers who made them laugh, and whose spicy wit, fashion style, and kindness graced their lives one way or another.
