Philippine mayors to march in 117th Independence Day fest

Mayors of Philippine cities will be joining the Independence Day celebration on Sunday, June 7. This was announced by Philippine Independence Day Council, Inc. (PIDCI) President Fe Martinez in a statement.

The mayors will be leading the parade march on Madison Avenue, together with Secretary of Foreign Affairs Alberto del Rosario, Ambassador to the U.S. Jose Cuisia, Jr., Consul General in New York Mario Lopez de Leon, Jr., and Philippine Permanent Representative to the United Nations Lourdes O. Yparraguirre.

Also headlining the celebration are Presidential Adviser on Environmental Protection Neric Acosta and U.S. District Judge Lorna Schofield.

The city chiefs who are confirmed to join the march are Herbert C. M. Bautista of Quezon City, who is also the current president of the League of Cities of the Philippines; Monico Puentevella of Bacolod City, and Edgardo Pamintuan of Angeles City.

The mayors will be in New York from June 8-10 to attend the Sixth World Cities Summit Mayors Forum hosted by New York City to be held the Grand Hyatt New York Hotel.

Other mayors and city officials who are listed as attending the Mayors Forum are: Governor of Bohol Province, Atty. Edgardo Chatto; Governor Samuel T. Gumarin of Guimaras Province; Metropolitan Manila Chairman Francis Tolentino, Mayor Michael L. Rama of Cebu City, Mayor Jed Patrick E. Mabilog of Iloilo City, Mayor Alfred S. Romualdez of Tacloban City, Mayor Aman C. Panaligan of Calapan City, Mindoro; Mayor Oscar Malapitan of Caloocan City; Mayor Jaime R. Fresnedi of Muntinlupa; Del R. de Guzman of Marikina City; Mayor Edwin L. Olivarez of Paranaque City; and Mayor Leonora Wong of San Simon, Pampanga.

The Independence Day celebration in New York is billed as the largest gathering of Filipinos outside of the Philippines. It has attracted more than 100,000 participants in previous years.
