Sports Illustrated speculates: Pacquiao for president
By Daniel de la Rosa
That familiar glare from a fuzzy goatee stared out from page 94 of Sports Illustrated’s November 7 edition. The world’s best pound-for-pound fighter was profiled in “The Evolution of Manny Pacquiao” where he shows the icy focus and determination that has marked him as the greatest Filipino pugilist in history.
Who in America can resist Pac-Man’s rags-to-riches epic? The boxing writers love his honest, modest nature, it’s almost like he has lived the American Dream, albeit with a long detour in the hardscrabble city of General Santos.
“Politics is his future,” SI said of the boxer, also congressman of Sarangani province.
In nine years, the magazine continued, “Pacquiao will likely run for President.”
“In 2013, Pacquiao, who has appeared often with (former) Philippine president Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, will run for governor in (the province of) Sarangani, likely unopposed.”
“Anyone who runs against him is the stupidest person in Sarangani,” the magazine quotes Pacquiao’s chief of staff, Jeng Gacal.
“Today, he is focusing on pleasing a crowd. Soon, it will be on securing his country’s future,” SI says.
