With only three colors, Las Vegas designer David Tupaz presented a minimalist ready-to-wear assortment resonant with energy, drama, passion, and mystery.

Black, white, and green were the colors of Tupaz’s Spring collection unveiled September 15 at the Philippine Center in celebration of New York Fashion Week. A sparse palette, but one that captured the essence of dressing that is classic, stylish and wearable.

Consul General Mario De Leon Jr. welcomed Tupaz to New York, where the designer got his start. He said Tupaz’s designs are “noted for their Filipino craftsmanship using intricate beadwork and meticulous embroidery,” and acknowledged his contribution to Philippine fashion, fabrics, and artistry during New York Fashion Week.

Tupaz said New York will always take credit for his budding talent. He said, “I came here to New York with only a suitcase and a dream.”

He moved to the West Coast because of his desire “to be closer to Hollywood and cater to the stars.” He is now a noted designer who has styled Red Carpet gowns for the likes of Jane Seymour, Kris Kardashian Jenner, Julia Roberts, Goldie Hawn, Kate Hudson, and Annette Bening.

The collection began with summer white dresses paired with straw Derby hats and beach totes. The greens came in the form of midis, shorts and pleated shift dresses with matching coats in black and white prints. The blacks made their entrance initially in stripes, polka dots and appliqued florals in semi-formal wear. Gowns in abundant black made of softer finery and topped with handpainted capes were warmly applauded. The women in the audience saw haute couture as something relatable and not so intimidating. It was runway fashion for real women

The show was produced by Dr. Richard Holsman and Elton Lugay.
