From boardwalk to beach, Ocean City’s tribute to the PH now on 3rd year
Tribute to the Philippines promises two days of family fun.
Aside from the usual trade and tourism exhibits of the last two years, the festival will introduce cultural performances that will showcase the music and dances of the Philippines, as well as health and wellness seminars for the residents and tourists of Ocean City, announced Consul General Mario de Leon.
The Philippine Folk Arts Society rondalla group based in Philadelphia will play traditional music. Philippine Mutya Dance Co. also of Philadelphia will perform aboriginal dance, while the Philippine Youth of South Jersey will render folk dances. American youngsters working at Air Circus toy shop in Ocean City will demonstrate their skills in playing yo-yo, a popular toy said to have originated in the Philippines.
Filipino doctors, nurses and health professionals from New York, New Jersey and Philadelphia will conduct free health check-ups — including blood pressure and blood sugar tests — and give health and wellness seminars.
“We will highlight our Filipino American medical professionals who are highly regarded in the U.S. for their competence and dedication to work,” said de Leon.
In 2010, Ocean City forged a sister city agreement with San Jose City in Occidental Mindoro. Rene Sese, a resident of Ocean City and a native of San Jose City, was instrumental in organizing the Philippine tribute, a project of the City Council, the Regional Chamber of Commerce of Ocean City and the Philippine Consulate General.
“I encourage Filipino Americans to come, visit and support Ocean City’s Tribute to the Philippines. With about 100,000 tourists going to Ocean City during summer time, the event gives us an excellent opportunity to promote our country and people to mainstream America,” said de Leon.
