On October 15, 2013 at 8:12 a.m., a 7.1 magnitude earthquake hit the island of Bohol, Philippines.

About 350,000 people were displaced and several of the Philippines’ historic coral stone churches, dating from the 18th through the 20th centuries, were damaged or destroyed. This sudden and devastating event is a reminder that the country lies in a highly active seismic zone and that the population and the country’s heritage structures are imminently at risk from future earthquakes.

To commemorate the first anniversary of this tragic event, The Philippine Consulate and Bakás Pilipinas, are hosting an evening presentation.

The evening’s theme, “Preserving and Rebuilding Our Philippine Heritage – The Bohol Earthquake Experience” will feature a slide presentation by Roz Li, president of Bakás Pilipinas, focusing on the churches before and after the earthquake, to be followed by a panel discussion by leaders of Filipino American organizations on the significance of these churches and what they expect to be done.

Bakás Pilipinas, is a New York-based not-for-profit organization promoting the preservation of historic architecture and sites in the Philippines.

The presentation will be held on October 21, 2014 at the Philippine Center, 556 Fifth Avenue, New York, NY, starting at 6:30 p.m. The public is invited and admission is free.
