‘The FilAm’ is now in the Nation’s Capital

Maricar CP Hampton, a longtime contributor to our site, has joined The FilAm family. She is now the editor of The FilAm Metro D.C., covering the areas of Metropolitan D.C. Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia, with a Filipino population of more than 75,000.
Maricar is a seasoned community journalist who has been tracking down Filipinos in D.C. area for Fil-Am Star in San Francisco, and before that Philippines News. A longtime Maryland resident, Maricar has covered two official visits to the White House of Philippine presidents Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and Benigno ‘Noynoy’ Aquino, is a regular at community-sponsored events and embassy functions, and occasionally attends policy briefings on Capitol Hill.
She has been on the case of Maryland’s marginalized Filipino teachers and chronicles updates on a proposed insurance program that would make Medicare available to FilAm retirees in the Philippines. A running joke between us is when she says White House Executive Chef Cristeta Comerford in on her speed dial.

“I’ve been doing this for some time,” said Maricar. “I’d like for people to know how we in the Metro D.C. area are doing and what our community is all about.”
She was the recipient of a New America Media fellowship for her series on ethnic elders. Her articles on “Filipino health workers struggle in filling elder care gap” and “Filipina nurse see long visa delay despite nursing shortage” were published in the NAM website.
Maricar left behind a 10-year editorial position with Philippine Star to join her family in the U.S. in 2005. She was a fashion & celebrity reporter in the newspaper founded by the politically connected Belmonte family. It was not an easy decision, but Maricar needed to be where her parents are.
Although based in D.C., Maricar can be counted on to take on writing assignments for The FilAm. She has interviewed some of the most interesting personalities in New York, such as artist-writer Randy Gener, public school teacher Lumen Castaneda, and trauma nurse Susan Gador.
