“What’s the T?,” an award-winning documentary portrait of transgender women, will be premiering exclusively on Hulu, on June 24th.

The film was an official selection at numerous major LGBT film festivals worldwide including: Frameline 37 San Francisco, Rio Gay Film Festival, Transgender Kiel Germany, as well as the Portland, Pensacola, and Soho International Film Festivals. Additionally, “What’s the T?” won the festival favorite award at Cinema Diverse Palm Springs and is widely considered the best film of its kind to hit the festival circuit in years.

“What’s the T?” centers around five transgender women whose stories are moving, exemplary articulations of life in a state of transition.

The cast features:

Cassandra Cass, one of the most recognizable transgender women today with appearances in “Trantasia” (2006), “CSI: Crime Scene Investigation” and “The Tyra Banks Show.”

Nya Ampon, a celebrated dancer and performer at AsiaSF, one of San Francisco’s hottest bars and performance venues.

Rakash Armani, a notable member of the ‘House of St. Clair,’ the legendary competing house in the underground ball scene.

Mia Tu Mutch, an LGBT advocate whose social work with LYRIC and the San Francisco Youth Commission has placed her on the prestigious Trans100 List.

Filmmaker Cecilio Asuncion

Victory Le, the star of TransAmerica, the upcoming transgender VH1 docuseries, produced by Tyra Banks, airing in late 2014 or early 2015.

Transgender characters and themes are rapidly emerging into the mainstream, particularly on television and video-on-demand (“Orange is the New Black” on Netflix, “Transparent” on Amazon).

Directly on this trend, the VOD release of “What’s the T?” is both timely and requisite. San Francisco-based filmmaker, Cecilio Asuncion utilizes his intimate relationship with the film’s subjects to create both a loving biography and a vivid expression of transgender life as it stands today– the terminology, the social realities, the successes and the heartbreak.

“What’s the T?” will be featured prominently in this year’s San Francisco Pride Parade in concert with its world premiere on Hulu on June 24th.
