Destination Delano weekend excursion slated for Sept. 28 & 29
Today, the role of Filipinos in the historic 1965 Delano Grape Strike has often been historically revised, restructured, obscured or simply ignored. On the weekend of September 28 & 29, Destination Delano, spearheaded by members of the Filipino community, are calling for Filipinos statewide to converge in the California Central Valley. The year 2013 is the 48th anniversary of the historic Delano Grape strike.
The purpose is to retrace the experiences of Filipino agricultural workers in Delano, CA and in Orosi, CA (near the Fresno area) which remains as our last remaining community of Filipino farmers.
The weekend event brings Filipino Americans together for a weekend of community building and political strategy with an expert panel to discuss this important subject in 20th Century Filipino-American history, a tour of Delano’s historical sites, caucus spaces, and guest speakers and performances. A primary aim is to gain national recognition for Delano as a historical site because of its role in the 1965 Grape Strike.
“It’s a kick-off to Pilipino American History Month (PAHM) in the same month as the grape strike was started,” says Jacklyn Joanino, one of the main organizers of Destination Delano.
The role of Filipinos and its leadership, namely Larry Itliong, in the historic 1965 Delano Grape Strike has been largely forgotten. Filipina farmer Mary Jane Galviso of Ilokano Farms explains, “It is important for us Filipinos to tell our own story and to have this history recorded accurately with an understanding of its relevance today. Ultimately, the 1965 Grape Strike is our history, the history of Filipinos in this country in our struggle as workers and immigrants to gain basic human rights.”
The goals of this weekend excursion include: 1) Bring together Filipinos throughout California to learn our buried history of the historic 1965 Delano Grape Strike. 2) Safeguard our last remaining Filipino American farming community in Orosi, California Central Valley, and 3) Seek a shared understanding among Filipinos of the significance of the 1965 Grape Strike.
