The L.A. Brilliant Lions Club, Friends of Echo Park Branch Library, and Green Mango Books recently joined hands to promote literacy and the Philippine Heritage Collection at the Echo Park Branch Library in Historic Filipino Town. The festivities showed the value of partnerships among community organizations.

Keynote speakers and authors Greg Villanueva and Carlene Bonnivier shared their journeys and passion to reconnect with their roots, which gave birth to the Philippine Heritage Collection. Reading “Araw Sa Palengke” with her daughter Sakura Walters, Giselle “G” Tongi of Channel 18 reinforced the importance of passing on bilingual education from parents to their children. Melody Amit of Green Mango Books and Emmie Manansala of LA Builder Lions Club paired up to read “Tight Times” in English and Tagalog.

Delivering “poetry in style,” Eddy Gana and Stephanie Sajor of “Sunday Jump” had the audience snapping to their powerful performance. Joel Jacinto of SIPA got the crowd on their feet for an impromptu Filipino folk dance.

Other participants included Dollar Hits food truck, serving street food, Pinoy style, and TV networks Channel 18/Fil-Am Television and Channel 35, filming the event. On behalf of Councilmember Gil Cedillo, Gerald Gubatan came to present certificates of recognition to all event collaborators.

Evangeline Tabberrah, president of the L.A. Brilliant Lions Club, planted the seed as part of their Reading Action Program. After learning of the Philippine Heritage Collection, she approached the Friends of Echo Park Branch Library with a donation of English-Tagalog children’s books from Green Mango Books. The Friends and Branch Manager Victoria Sikora of the Echo Park Branch Library gratefully accepted the books to add to the collection.
