New England student clubs to host March 9 comedy tour

For the first time on the East Coast, three FilAm funnymen will bring a mixed bag of ethnic and mainstream comedy to college campuses via the Pacific Punchlines Comedy Tour.

The show to benefit Sendong Typhoon victims in the Philippines is being organized by FilAm student clubs from Harvard, MIT and Boston University and throughout the New England area.

“Pacific Punchlines” will feature on March 9 an evening of standup comedy featuring Alek Bituin, Rich Kiamco and Air Tabigue. It will be held at The Loft @ Tommy Doyle Bar and Restaurant at 96 Winthrop Street, Cambridge, Mass.

“This is something different, something fun, something new, and something we wanted to do with FilAm organizations in various colleges and universities,” said Tabigue.

The trio have their own unique comedy styles. The energetic Rich Kiamco (“Queer Eye for The Straight Guy,” “The Howard Stern Show”) draws laughs on most any topic and does not hold back, including drawing the curtain on his own same-sex marriage. Air Tabigue (“Asian America” on PBS, NBC) can play up a crowd with observational humor about his family and suburban background. Alek Bituin (New York Comedy Club), a California native, uses pop culture and politics to create his own brand of highbrow and lowbrow satire.

The comedians realize how many Filipino clubs try to present the usual type of activity year in and year out: It could be a bake sale or a program with a ‘barrio fiesta’ theme. Pacific Punchlines will incorporate humor to the standard fare of cultural musical numbers.

“It’s about laughing together with friends and family,” said Tabigue. “We’d love to have parents come to show too.”

Their debut will be in combination with a variety of musical artists. The program will also feature performers Kayumanggi Band, Paper June, Dennis Sy, Teake, Michelle Semana, Laurie Anne Creus, Otan Vargas, Michael Christian, Isabella, Cole and Nathan. Community leader Joe Bolandrina and Miss Rhode Island Julianna Strout will emcee the show, while DJ Flips spins the music. The fun begins at 8 p.m.

This is just the start. There’s more comedy tours being planned by Pacific Punchlines with guest comedians expected to come on board.
