‘Won’t hurt to take it down a notch on the gift-giving and send help to Sendong victims
It’s almost ritualistic. Every time a disaster hits the Philippines claiming lives in the thousands, the hat is passed around.
FilAms, who themselves are feeling the strain of the U.S. economy in their family budget, are once again being asked to chip in. There’s some grumbling here and there, some crying ‘donation fatigue,’ but always count on overseas Filipinos to be among the most generous in times like this.

Meanwhile, Jersey City Mayor Jerramiah Healy said the best way to help the people of the Philippines is to “donate directly to an aid organization whose volunteers assess the needs on the ground and purchase relief items in the affected region, thereby supporting the local economy.” Jersey City is a neighborhood where many FilAms live.
He and Councilman-at-Large Rolando Lavarro Jr. are partnering to solicit funds to help typhoon victims. They are suggesting that checks be made payable to the American Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund. For these donations to reach the survivors, all memo lines on checks must include: “Philippines Typhoon Washi Relief 12/11.”
Many thanks for spending just a little bit less on the gift-giving this year and reallocating that $20 or $50 to Filipino families crushed by Typhoon Sendong (international name: Washi).
