On women’s rights and guns, the Supreme Court flunked

The majority conservatives on the court are imposing decisions that the overwhelming majority of Americans do not support.

The recent decision on Roe v Wade is viewed by this publication not only through the prism of providing relief to women who get pregnant through rape or incest. Others have taken up that cause more eloquently than The FilAm.

We are more concerned about a basic tenet of being American. That how you conduct your life is no one’s business but your own. My life. My body. My decision.

The Supreme Court just made it its business with its recent decision overturning the nearly 50-year Roe guaranteeing a woman’s right to an abortion.  Like the Taliban who declared girls can’t go to secondary school, the highest court just decided that women can’t get an abortion. That abortion will have to be determined by the 50 states. About 22 to 30 states have an outright ban on abortion, which includes so-called “trigger” states whose restrictive laws will go into effect once Roe is eliminated. A woman needing an abortion who lives in one of these states, will have to travel long hours to another state to get one.

“Roe was egregiously wrong from the start,” writes Justice Samuel Alito, in the Supreme Court opinion. “Its reasoning was exceptionally weak, and the decision has had damaging consequences. And far from bringing about a national settlement of the abortion issue, Roe and Casey have enflamed debate and deepened division.”

The anti-abortion groups cite the issue of morality in their campaign and want to impose that on everyone else. That is plainly wrong and un-American to a degree that smacks of theocracy.

A significant number of Americans support a woman’s right to make her own decision, most especially on health grounds or on rape or incest. Abortion is not just a Democrat or a liberal issue. It is a woman’s issue, this fundamental right to decide if she wants to carry her baby to term or not.

On another equally important case, the Supreme Court thumbed down a New York State law against carrying a concealed weapon. This in a state where a nut job just slaughtered 10 African Americans in Buffalo. The ruling endangers public safety by allowing a crazy individual to tote a firearm and open fire on a public already horrified by the proliferation of guns in society.

What was surprising about these twin malodorous rulings is they came quickly one after the other. The majority conservatives on the court are imposing decisions that the overwhelming majority of Americans do not support. Both decisions go against public belief and, to be downright blunt about it, are senseless.
