Daily Malong, a Pinay-owned fashion brand centered around indigenous designs and weaves, will participate in this year’s New York Fashion Week produced by hiTechMODA.

Founder and Chief Creative Officer Lydia Querian said Daily Malong aims to build awareness of “uncommon” Filipino textiles in a more prominent platform like New York Fashion Week (NYFW).

“I decided to work with hiTechMODA because they promote fashion brands focused on environmental, sustainability, and inclusivity.”

HiTechMODA is a fashion production company that harnesses the power of technology as it opens opportunities for designers, models, and other industry players.

Daily Malong’s debut in NYFW is themed around “Indigenous is the Future.” The term “indigenous” is often associated with old, ancient, or primitive. Daily Malong’s latest collection wants to change that narrative by bringing the indigenous to the present and future, said Querian, a dance and music artist. “Daily Malong was built to help the Pilipinx in the diaspora better understand themselves through fashion as they navigate their identity.”

Another Daily Malong original creation.

Daily Malong partnered with Darzah, a woman-owned nonprofit that produces handcrafted shoes, bags, and hair accessories from Palestine. Darzah works with refugee and low-income women artisans in the West Bank who hand-embroider each of their products. It is known as an “ethical” fashion brand.

Daily Malong is also in collaboration with Maggie’s Box, another Filipino brand. The company specializes in ballet flat shoes and low-heeled footwear for women. Their handcrafted shoes make use of abaca material derived from the banana plant grown in the Philippines.

“Darzah and Maggie’s Box will be providing Daily Malong footwear to complete the runway looks,” said Querian. “Our curated partners share the same goal of celebrating and preserving each other’s cultures on a big platform, such as New York Fashion Week.”

She said bringing indigenous weaving practices to the future “perpetuates time-tested traditions, helps the present and protects the future.”

“Each indigenous textile worn today helps wearers and weavers navigate societal atrocities, prevent climate change, and restore a more sustainable environment,” she added.

Daily Malong’s runway is slated for September 10 at the Edison Hotel on Times Square. For more information, visit the website at www.dailymalong.com and their Instagram and Facebook @DailyMalong.
