The delay in the release of the Mueller Report has set the stage for a potential legal battle between the White House and Congress.
A four-page summary authored by Attorney General William Barr does not satisfy the American public’s clamor for the complete report. Comes now a New York Times article stating that the special counsel investigation report is “more damaging” than what Barr had released: Barr’s summary states the investigation does not have sufficient evidence to establish obstruction of justice, but that it also does not exonerate the President.
From that short summary, the Trump administration has been proclaiming victory for himself and his team: “No collusion…A complete and total exoneration.” He even went to the extent of demanding an apology from the Democrats for what he called the “partisan investigations.”
The outcry for the release of the complete Mueller Report has been loud and unrelenting. A joint statement by Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D. NY) and House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), said that “Given Mr. Barr’s public record of bias against the special counsel’s inquiry, he is not a neutral observer and is not in a position to make objective determination about the report.”
Barr’s judicial appointment came after he had written in a random, unsolicited memo dated June 2018 arguing why the “president could not be accused of obstruction in this case.”
While the people await a full special counsel report, media analysts did not hesitate in commenting how Barr himself “auditioned” for the attorney general position and that “Barr did what Trump hired him to do.”
Interestingly, the Mueller investigation was said to be so exhaustive, contained in a 400-page report. It was, according to the NYT, a two-year investigation that involved nearly 500 witnesses and issued nearly 2,800 subpoenas.
Mueller has left no doubt that Russia interfered in the election on Trump’s behalf, according to political analysts who described how Trump openly invited Russian hackers to hack Hillary Clinton’s e-mail server. There is also that much-publicized Trump Tower meeting where a Russian lawyer offered “dirt” on Hillary, and Donald Trump Jr., is reported to have gushed, “I love it.”
In spite of Barr’s assurance that the special counsel report would be available “soon,” there is intense speculation about how it will be presented to the American public.
Will the people see a redacted version of the report?
Does the abbreviated Barr report intend to provide Trump with a partisan victory?
Will Barr, a political appointee who controls the fate of the Mueller findings stray away from the Justice Department’s mission to cling to the truth anticipated by the people of the United States?
Will he provide an honest decision from the full Mueller report that the White House cannot suppress?
What will be the value of the Mueller Report considering that the President still faces criminal investigations in the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, which also reports to Barr?
Is it time to investigate the investigators?
