Mass communications graduate Criselda Bernardo from Bacolod, and Michelle Semana, a civil engineer from Zambales were proclaimed winners of the worldwide search for the Pinoy Singing Idol, now on its second year.

The two New Yorkers won $1,000 each and a round-trip ticket to Manila to join other finalists from Australia, Canada, Dubai, Hong Kong, Japan and Singapore at the grand finals to be held in the Philippines.

“We’re happy to be able to hold a community event where we can showcase our Filipino talent in a singing competition that inspires the contestants to follow their dreams,” said organizer Luis Pedron of Queens Asian Fest (QAF). The event was held on July 30 at the Sheraton La Guardia East Hotel in Flushing. Rolan and Myrna Gutierrez are co-organizers of the contest.

About 300 people attended the event, mostly families of the 10 Idol contestants and fans of ABS-CBN celebrities Rachel Alejandro and Gabby Concepcion who were invited to crown the winners assisted by Broadway actors Miguel Braganza and Rhona Amorado.

Radio personality Ahwel Paz directed the show and co-hosted the three-hour program with JR Lavarro. DZMM Teleradyo station manager Marah Capuyan led the panel of judges.

The finalists were Christina Cancio, Chel Castillo, MJ Cruzada, Edmerald Gan, Eric Garzon, Darryl Margallo, Cynthia Reyes and Bryan de Leon, who placed second.

Pedron said QAF seeks to create exciting programs in support of the growing Asian and Filipino communities in the borough of Queens. — Elton Lugay
