Blue-versus-green tradition lives on.

The Ateneo Alumni Northeast Inc. (AANI) and the De La Salle Alumni Association Metro New York are sponsoring a volleyball and basketball tournament featuring alumni players.

Pasiklaban 2011: Rivalry for Charity is slated for July 9, 12 noon to 7 p.m., at St. Peter’s College on 870 Montgomery Street in Jersey City. The AANI beneficiary is the Friends of Saint Ignatius, a movement that supports the needs of Jesuits in the Philippines.

The World Caravan Global Pinoy Singing Idol will be held July 30 at the Sheraton LaGuardia East Hotel 135-20 39th Avenue in Flushing, Queens.

Ten aspiring singers from the Tri-State will compete. They are: MJ Cruzada, Bryan de Leon, Cynthia Reyes, Michelle Semana, Eric Garcon, Tina Cancio, Darryl Margalo, Edmerald Gan, Chel Castillo and Criselda Bernardo. The champion will be awarded a roundtrip airfare to the Philippines to compete in the grand finals at the end of 2011.

The Philippine-American Festival & Film Series is ongoing till August 9 at the Secaucus Public Library in New Jersey.

The event features free screenings of the following films: “Los Banos Rescue of 1945” on July 5, “Baler” on July 12, and “Dancing the Shrimp” on July 19. “Los Banos” is the story of how the combined forces of U.S. troopers and Filipino guerrillas rescued prisoners of war held in a Japanese internment camp in Southern Tagalog. “Baler” is a historical romance drama between a half-Spanish soldier and a native woman. “Dancing” is a documentary about the early Filipinos who settled in Louisiana.

There will also be a one-day exhibit on the Colors of the Cordillera on July 12. It will focus on the indigenous wear and crafts of the Cordillera region including an explanation on the context and meaning of the colors and designs of the regional attire.

The July 5 reception will be have as special guests Deputy Consul General Melita Thomeczek; Fr. John Ruane, S.J., who was rescued at Los Banos, and retired Col. Michael Ruane of the 11th Airborne Division.
