Former AIG chairman sees the PH as a ‘high growth area’

Hank Greenberg: He founded the PhilAm Life Insurance, an AIG affiliate

Former AIG Chairman Hank Greenberg praised the Philippines as one of the high growth areas in the world during his lecture last week on “The U.S.- Philippine relationship: A Heightened Importance” held at Fordham University.

Greenberg who is currently the chairman and CEO of C.V. Starr and Company, spoke nostalgically about his days building up to the huge insurance giant AIG and how important PhilAm Life Insurance was in the early days of the company. PhilAm Life Insurance is one of the oldest and largest insurance companies in the Philippines and is an AIG affiliate.

“Everything starts with an idea, with someone saying yes. Today’s program would not have been possible without Mr. Greenberg saying yes,” said Philippine-American Chamber of Commerce President Rene “Butch” Meily as he thanked Greenberg for his participation in the program.

The PACC hosted the event where Ambassador Jose Cuisia and Fordham President Fr. Joseph McShane S.J. also spoke. TLC Beatrice CEO Loida Nicolas Lewis, Consul General Mario de Leon and Deputy Consul General Tess de Vega were among the attendees. Boies Schiller, one of New York’s premier law firms, sponsored the event.

Cuisia fondly recalled his experiences with Greenberg building up PhilAm Life Insurance, which he headed for many years.

Founded in 1920, the chamber has played an important role in the promotion of Philippine interests in the U.S., said Meily.

“Over the years, it has included among its members some of the top corporations in the U.S. and the Philippines,” he said.
