If you’re in town visiting NYC, make sure to include the New York Public Library of the Performing Arts in your itinerary – no matter how tight your schedule is. The NYPL is part of the Lincoln Center complex. To get there, Take the 1 Train and go down at 66th Street.

On display until June 30, 2017 are costumes, photographs, scripts, set models, film clips, even letters at the library’s Dorothy and Lewis B. Cullman Center. The exhibit is called “Curtain Up: Celebrating the Last 40 Years of Theatre in New York and London” devoted to musical productions that have won or have been nominated for both a Tony and Olivier Award.

The FilAm visited the NYPL and was treated to an array of spectacular, original costumes, such as the jacket Rudolf Nereyev wore to “Romeo and Juliet” at the 1977 London Ballet Festival. There were costumes that appeared common until one learns the lace mini dress was worn by Ruthie Henshall for the West End production of “Chicago” where she earned an Olivier nomination for playing Roxie Hart.

On view are top hats from “A Chorus Line,” masks from “The Lion King,” set models from “Matilda,” among other productions, that truly “explore the craft and collaboration that creates spectacular international theatre.” A handwritten letter from Ian McKellen to his understudy in “Amadeus” was among the theater treasures.

Catch a play, then visit the NYPL. Together, they complement each other.
